A verse is a single metrical line in a poetic composition. Verses represent grouping of words (lines).Every word contains syllables.
In other and simple words, every line is a verse, but it is important to know that verses can be composed with different styles.
- Remember: poetry is different from prose and we write it with lines (verses);
- Verses shouldn't be too long and it is better to write short verses in case of doubt;
- Verses are grouped by stanzas. We can find stanzas with three, four or more verses.
Where/when is the right moment to stop a verse or a stanza? There is not a unique anwser. It depends by our goal and message we want to send to the reader.
Punctuation is very important. We can use it at the end of a verse to slow down reading, or to insert a pause between words or stanzas.
Important: never stop a verse with a randomly choice. Try different lenghts and read every "version" of your verses in order to find your favourite style! Ask to yourself: how does it sounds in this way? Is it better in this form? What does it send to the reader with less/more words?
This guide is only about basic guidelines. There will be much more contens later.
Thank you for reading it.
